Affluenza is the disease of consumerism. The most basic result is that we have twice as much stuff and yet are not happy with ourselves. The reasons for this unhappiness, according to this video, is that we are on a never ending cycle of buy and dispose, buy and dispose. In order to maintain this cycle we need to work longer hours and are always reaching and always striving for the next best thing so we never reach that sense of fulfillment and inner happiness for a job well done, a life well lived.
This movie seemed to be pretty obvious to me in its delivery but made it easy to watch and did clearly get the message across.
The one part that was impressive was that there are young people out there who are able to think and see through all the advertising and who are able to understand that consumerism is not healthy and not the way to go forward. Even though it was only a handful of kids, it still gave me hope that all is not lost yet!
