JE #21 - Media: Broadasting Sustainability

Today in class we had a presentation with regards to the chapter in the "2010 State of the World: Transforming Cultures" on Media: Broadcasting Sustainability.

This particular chapter of the book focused on how the media needs to make a shift from consumerism to sustainability.

The statistic that most stood out is that 70% of people acknowledge that climate change is a problem but don't know how to make a change. There were several examples displayed that showed how the media has been directly involved in making people aware of the climate change issue and while that is all well and good the presenters pointed out that there is not enough media focus on exactly how we could make changes to help the climate change movement along.

I wholeheartedly agree with this as well and really hope that the social entrepreneurs will see the gap in marketing here and make some efforts to it before the corporations and lobbyists get involved and start making the spin campaigns in their favor. That would surely hurt us more than help us!!

The other portion of the presentation I enjoyed was in regards to how music and the arts can be used as a vehicle for change. We have also lost this along the way somewhere. Even our music has turned into commercialism with ads for products being sung right into the songs and even in the videos. Below you will find an example of the worst kind of marketing in our music. Bring back the good old days where folks like Otis Redding used to sing about sitting on the dock of the bay. If we were to sit on the dock of our bay and sing about it today, it wouldn't be about the relaxation of it, it would be about how we get oil out of our skin and bathing suits!!!! But that would make an impact and hopefully move someone to get out and make a change!
